Outline
CONFERENCE SYNOPSIS:

This conference will look at the care of the deteriorating patient using a ‘case history approach’, learning from past coronial and published cases. We do not look at such cases to scoff, but rather to see where greater understanding and learnings can be achieved to assist in safer patient care.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

In this conference you will:

  • Explore the overall coronial process
  • Learn about real cases of different types of patient deterioration to enhance procedural knowledge. Procedural knowledge may be defined as the knowledge we use to act, encompassing skills, techniques, and the ability to secure goals within the working environment.
  • Understand the importance of a firm process of escalation of care in your institution
  • Increase your knowledge of the overall care of the deteriorating patient
YOU WILL ALSO LEARN
  • Airway management
  • Respiratory compromise
  • Cardiovascular collapse
  • Medication error
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Rare complications such as Malignant hyperthermia
  • And much more!

The Cruise Ship: Carnival Splendor

It’s hard to tell which onboard space best represents Carnival Splendor — they all seem to hint at the amazing time you’re going to have. El Morocco Lounge hosts comedy shows, musical performances, karaoke and more… and wears its 1930s namesake clearly on its nameplate. The words “Royal Flush Casino” incite visions of winning, while our onboard jazz club — The Cool — simply says it all without saying Carnival Splendora word. And Fahrenheit 555 can be found not only at the height of elegant dining, but at the actual apex of the ship.

If you like your fun to flow, there are options aplenty. If you list “splishing” and “splashing” among your favorite things to do, there’s Carnival WaterWorks. Those into sitting and sliding are invited to try the all-new Green Lightning thrill-slide. How about floating or swimming around? Carnival Splendor has pools all over the place, including the midship pool featuring a retractable roof that makes any day a pool day. So whether you splish or splash, you’ll find hydro-excitement galore.

If relaxation is your thing, Serenity Adult-Only Retreat is more your place. Or if you’re looking to take relaxation to the extreme, direct your attention to the Cloud 9 Spa, featuring more (and better) ways to kick back than just about anywhere else, on land or at sea. You haven’t lived until you’ve relaxed in a Thalassotherapy pool, or chilled — so to speak — in a dry heat chamber.

The Program:

The program content is provided by expert Nurse Educators with extensive clinical and education experience. The education content provided in this program meets the same exacting standards as anything offered in an Australian land-based program. No matter what conference you attend you always need accommodation. A cruise ship provides a great all-inclusive* accommodation option to enhance your Conference experience. Education at Sea and The Nurses for Nurses Network combine great education with fabulous travel adventures. We have taken a holistic approach to Nursing Continuing Professional Development (CPD) to ensure you get the most out of your education-travel experience.

The Online Library

The Library has been created so that you have access to some of the Conference content prior to our sail date. The documents, including self-directed activities and webinars, from our Conference Presenter, are provided so that you can create your own conference experience and access information and sessions of interest prior to the commencement of the Conference program.

Optional Tours

Dunedin

We will travel to the very remote side of the Otago Peninsula to a family farm at Cape Saunders that has access to private wildlife habitats and a beach not accessible to the public. On the way we travel the high road overlooking the beautiful Otago Harbour and drop down into two very remote inlets with lots of opportunities to see a variety of wildlife, including wading birds and stunning scenery.  We have a few stops at some beautiful locations and then we arrive at the farm and travel down to our wildlife areas with a toilet stop available on arrival and exit.

The Yellow-Eyed penguins are nesting at that time of the year so we should be lucky enough to see a parent on a nest or an adult returning or heading out to sea.  These penguins are the rarest in the world and not seen in large numbers.

You will also see numerous sea birds and potentially albatrosses from two stunning viewpoints overlooking the rugged Pacific Ocean. There may even be a chance to see the cutest newborn baby fur seal pups!  We then travel down to the beach to see rare NZ Sea lions as they frequent their beach all year round.  On our way out we visit the stunning Cape Saunders crater from a magnificent viewpoint overlooking a lighthouse, and then we exit the farm and journey back along the low road following the Otago Harbour.

You will be provided with high quality binoculars and wind and wet weather jackets.  Travellers will need to bring their warmest clothing and sensible walking shoes.
