Perfectly timed for peak Northern Lights viewing in Norway. An opportunity to step away and gain clarity on the future of nursing—and your place within it.
Outline
Conference Synopsis:

There is nothing static about nursing. The pace, the pressure, the expectations all of it is shifting, and not quietly.

What it means to be a nurse today is not what it was five years ago, and it will not be the same five years from now.

This conference is built for that reality.

Set against one of the most striking journeys in the world, sailing from Hamburg through the Norwegian coastline and into the Arctic Circle, this is an opportunity to step out of the day-to-day and take a clear, honest look at where the profession is heading and what that means for your practice.

The program focuses on the issues nurses are dealing with not the polished version, but the real one. Workforce pressures are no longer background noise. They are shaping care delivery, influencing decision-making, and determining who stays in the profession and who leaves. Sessions will explore the realities of workload, moral distress, and retention, alongside practical discussions on leadership at the bedside and the evolving nature of nursing work.

At the same time, scope of practice is expanding in ways that are changing professional frontiers. Nurse prescribing, advanced practice roles, and working at top of scope are no longer future concepts. They are happening now, raising important questions about capability, accountability, and collaboration across disciplines.

Technology is also redefining care. Digital health, artificial intelligence, virtual care models, and remote monitoring are already embedded in many settings. This is not about whether these changes are coming, but how they are being used, where the risks sit, and what nurses need to understand to use them safely and effectively in practice.

Overlaying all of this is increasing patient complexity. Multi-morbidity across all age groups, the intersection of mental and physical health, and the ongoing impact of chronic disease are challenging traditional models of care. Nurses are managing more, with less, in systems that are still trying to catch up.

Beyond the clinical environment, broader forces are shaping health outcomes in ways that cannot be ignored. Social determinants of health, environmental change, resource allocation, and access to care are directly influencing who becomes unwell, how they present, and what care is possible. For Australian nurses, this includes the ongoing challenges of rural and remote practice and the persistent inequities experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Professional identity is also under pressure. Workplace culture, incivility, and the realities of maintaining boundaries in both physical and digital environments are part of everyday practice.

This conference creates space for these conversations to be had in a way that is practical, grounded, and relevant.

This is not a conference built on idealised versions of nursing. It is built on the real work, the real challenges, and the real opportunities that sit in front of the profession right now. Combined with the experience of travelling through some of the most extraordinary landscapes in the world, this is a chance to step back, think clearly, and return to practice with a sharper understanding of what is changing and how to navigate it.

Learning outcomes:

By the end of this conference, participants will be able to:

  • Analyse the key factors shaping contemporary nursing practice, including workforce pressures, evolving scope of practice, and increasing patient complexity,
and their impact on care delivery.
  • Evaluate the role of emerging models of care, including digital health, artificial intelligence, and virtual care, in supporting safe, effective, and accessible
    healthcare.
  • Examine the influence of social, environmental, and structural determinants on health outcomes, and their implications for nursing practice across diverse populations.
  • Reflect on professional identity, workplace culture, and leadership in nursing, to support safe practice, effective collaboration, and sustainable career engagement.
CALL FOR ABSTRACTS:

We invite nurses and healthcare professionals to submit abstracts for presentation at this unique conference. This conference is focused on the realities of modern nursing practice. We are seeking presentations that reflect current challenges, emerging trends, and practical insights relevant to nurses working across all clinical settings.

Submissions should move beyond theory and demonstrate clear relevance to practice. We are particularly interested in abstracts that address real-world experience, evidence-informed approaches, and innovations that are already influencing care delivery.

Who Should Submit:

  • Registered nurses across all clinical areas
  • Nurse practitioners and advanced practice nurses
  • Nurse educators and researchers
  • Interdisciplinary professionals working closely with nursing teams

For full information on how to submit an abstract, please click here.

These areas are directly relevant to the provision of safe, person-centred, and evidence-informed care.

Our Presenter:

SUE WALKER – RN, BN, BN (ADMIN), MPHC (PALCARE), MACN

Sue Walker, RN, BN, BN (ADMIN), MPHC (PALCARE), MACN, Specialist Nurse Educator

Sue is the director and co-founder of the Nurses for Nurses Network. Sue is a key contributor to the online education platform Nursing CPD – a Continuing Professional Development library.

As a Registered Nurse, Sue holds Degrees in both Nursing and Health Administration, a Master’s Degree in Public Health, as well as a number of certificate courses in Psychiatry of Ageing,
Gerontology, Chemotherapy Administration, Training and Assessment. She is also an Accredited Mental Health First Aid Trainer, Mindfulness Practitioner, and Clinical Supervisor.

Sue has extensive experience both as a clinician, educator, and senior manager. She has presented at local and international conferences on many topics including key issues such as the psychological impact of the work that Nurses do and how the work requirements to deliver healthcare impact on the health of the clinician. Sue is passionate about making a difference to the way in which people experience the health care system.

Nurses are the backbone of the healthcare system and work in difficult environments that can take advantage of their caring nature and commitment to ensuring the best possible care is delivered. Our health care system relies on Nurses to work extra shifts, longer shifts, double shifts. It relies on Nurses and Midwives willingly changing their plans to meet the needs of the organisation, to the detriment of their own personal lives and relationships.

“Healthcare should be delivered by competent, knowledgeable individuals to ensure the best possible experience for the recipient of that care. Nursing is a fabulous profession. It is the knowledge and skill of the individual Nurse that will have the greatest influence on the happiness and health outcomes of each and every client.”

Sue is excited to offer her extensive clinical experience and also create a space for attendees to connect and discuss their experiences and challenges. The learning environment will be enjoyable and engaging for all participants.
