Outline
CONFERENCE SYNOPSIS:
Perioperative nursing is a fabulous career; however, it can be very challenging when dealing with long hours, ‘production pressure’ and ongoing demands to keep up with learnings about new procedures and technologies. All these stressors can see the passion in our hearts for nursing diminish which is most undesirable for not just ourselves, but our patients. Combining education with cruising is the most fabulous way to, not just learn and gain your yearly CPD points, but to recharge your emotional batteries and come away with your ‘passion’ for nursing’ reignited!
Perioperative nursing is not always taught in the undergraduate curricula; thus, the importance of post-registration education in this specialty cannot be overestimated. It will also provide valuable learning for surgical ward nurses (or any nurses who care for surgical patients) who want to have a better understanding of the surgical process to enhance their nursing care.
Suitable for both novice and experienced nurses, this conference will strengthen understanding of perioperative care, enhance clinical awareness and reinforce the critical role perioperative nurses play in safeguarding patients during surgery.
Learning will cover anaesthesia, intraoperative care, and Post Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU) nursing topics. Whilst you may work in one specific area, it is vital to understand all facets of the perioperative patient journey as each phase impacts on the others.
Please attend all sessions to ensure a full learning experience. You will come away educated and empowered and realise that perioperative nurses are really the most unique and talented speciality, who can make a HUGE difference to our patient care if we really try.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
At this conference you will:
- Depart feeling educated, empowered and with a rejuvenated passion for perioperative nursing
- Have greater understanding of modern perioperative care and perioperative nursing practice
- Learn about new treatment and management in anaesthesia, intraoperative care, and Post Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU)
- Enjoy learning via a case study approach to highlight real learning from the coroner and clinical practice
YOU WILL ALSO LEARN:
- Current advances in anaesthesia, surgery and perioperative practice.
- The impact of obesity, bariatric surgery and GLP-1 medications on perioperative care.
- Modern fasting guidelines, including the “Sip til Send” approach and aspiration risk.
- Lessons from real coronial case studies involving airway emergencies, PACU care and air embolism.
- New developments in robotic surgery and the management of robotic surgical emergencies.
- The principles of surgical conscience and their importance in maintaining patient safety.
- Best practice in Post Anaesthesia Care Unit (PACU) assessment, monitoring and management.
- How to apply Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists Guideline PS04 to everyday PACU practice.
- ECG interpretation and recognition of common postoperative cardiac complications in PACU.
- Ethical decision-making, informed consent and strategies for speaking up to improve patient safety.
- The causes and impact of workplace incivility, compassion fatigue and quiet quitting, with practical strategies to support wellbeing and professional resilience.

Travel Insurance - Don't forget to include cruise cover
We are happy to provide travel insurance quotes upon request for any travel needs. There is no obligation.
New Caledonia requires that all guests hold valid travel insurance and printed proof must be presented at embarkation. Even if you don’t plan on going ashore in New Caledonia, you are still required to have insurance. Your travel insurance must be valid for the duration of the cruise and should provide coverage for all the countries included in your itinerary.
Booking your travel insurance with Travel Direct Australia/Education At Sea provides the convenience of having all your travel plans organised under one roof. This also comes with the advantage of having all your associated travel costs on a single statement of account.
We also strongly recommend ensuring your travel insurance policy includes adequate cruise cover, as not all policies automatically include cruising. Cruise-specific cover can provide important protection for things such as cruise cancellation, on-board medical expenses, ship-to-shore medical transfers, sea sickness, cabin confinement, missed embarkation, and missed shore excursions.
Please email travel@traveldirectaustralia.com.au or note it on your booking form that you would like a quote.
