Exploration of best cardiac care from the basic to the complex

This conference relates to the Nurse in the Cath Lab, CCU, critical care, cardiothoracic ward, and emergency departments. Nurses working in the Community setting in either medical surgeries, community care, aged care as well as the ward Nurse. Any Nurse wishing to increase their knowledge of clinical assessment skills and intervene in a situation where a patient’s condition is deteriorating.

Nurses who have attended Anne’s previous Respiratory and Cardiac seminars, will find aspects of the 12 lead ECG lecture, and Atrial Fibrillation a review but with added depth relating to different content.

  • A brief review of normal electrophysiology, Heart sounds, especially relating to Heart Failure and Valve Disorders. Septal rupture, ventricular rupture and presentation
  • Valve disorders in greater depth: Aortic stenosis, Mitral regurgitation. Latest information on valve intervention procedures: TAVI
  • Measuring JVP – relating to heart failure, Interpretation of ECHO, What to look at: EF, LV & RV function; Dysynchrony; AV & MV
  • 12 lead ECG interpretation which includes greater depth than covered in the Respiratory and Cardiac seminar
  • Right ventricular Myocardial infarction, Examining aVR in greater depth, implications for anterior MI interpretation, Heart Failure and latest terminology: HFrEF, HFpEF (Echo as well)
  • Interventional cardiology: Angiogram, angioplasty, stents, Bioabsorbable stents; FFR & iFR; Lithotripsy; alcohol septal ablation, Aortic Balloon Pump, Impella device, Pacemakers, Cardiogenic shock and inotropes
  • Scenarios: recognition of the deteriorating patient in the Cath Lab, CCU and cardiothoracic wards

Presenters:

 

Ken has extensive experience in the area of Critical Care practice & education. Ken has had more than 25 years of experience Co-ordinating & teaching in Critical Care Courses & involvement in Medical Education. Ken is the Founder and Principal Consultant for Critical Care Education Services.

In April 2020, as a response to the COVID-19 Pandemic Response, the Australian Commonwealth Department of Health contracted with Ken, and Critical Care Education Services which is now part of the Medcast Group to provide upskilling of Registered Nurses to move from High Dependency Areas to Intensive Care and from General wards to move into the High Dependency Units. The programs that Ken designed were called SURGE Critical Care, which stands for S pecialised U pskilling and R N G rowth through E ducation in Critical Care. More than 20,000 Nurses undertook this upskilling which was provided in an online format with 10 of Critical Care Education Services Consultants supported by a team of 20 from the Medcast group providing e-learning, technical, logistical and administrative support. Truly a team effort.

Ken has been an active member of many professional organisations and has many publications to his credit in the areas of respiratory & cardiac care, pulse oximetry, professional development, & resuscitation.

Most recently Ken has authored two book chapters for one of the most widely sold texts in the Asia-Pacific region, Lewis’s Medical/Surgical Nursing 5th edn. (2019) on the topics of Recognizing and Responding to Clinical Deterioration, and Resuscitation.

In recognition of his outstanding contribution to education, Ken has been awarded honorary life membership of the Australian College of Perianaesthesia Nurses (ACPAN). Ken has also been a member of the Australian Resuscitation Council, including the Advanced Life Support Committee, and a Ministerial Advisor to many Ministers of Health at both State and Federal Levels.

Ken is widely sought for his expertise in consulting, lecturing & conducting short education programs, & has regularly presented at national & international conferences.

Conference Program

The program content is provided by expert Educators with extensive clinical and education experience. The education content provided in this program meets the same exacting standards as anything offered in an Australian land-based program.

The Nurses for Nurses Network combines great education with fabulous travel adventures. We have taken a holistic approach to Continuing Professional Development (CPD) to ensure you get the most out of your education-travel experience.

In the spirit of adult learning, the Conference is delivered in two formats. The live presentations delivered in the Conference Room and there is the online library which is open one month prior to the actual Conference dates. The library is an essential component of the entire Conference program.

The library consists of Conference material supplied by the Presenter/s which can include any of the following:

  • Research documents
  • Links to external information
  • Recorded Conference presentations
  • Electronic Notepads

The research documents and recorded Conference presentation form part of the Continuing Professional Development activities but are delivered to you prior to the commencement date so that you can start your Conference Program early. If you choose not to undertake these activities prior, there is a two week window post the Conference where the library remains open to you. You can also undertake the library activities during the actual Conference.

La Spezia is a port city in Liguria, Italy. Its 1800s maritime arsenal and the Technical Naval Museum, with ship models and navigational instruments, attest to the city’s seafaring heritage. The hilltop St. George’s Castle houses an archaeological museum with artefacts from prehistory to the Middle Ages.

Civitavecchia, Rome

Civitavecchia is a coastal town northwest of Rome, in Italy. Built in the 2nd century, the Port of Civitavecchia still retains some of its original features, like the Roman Dock. The port area also includes the 16th-century Michelangelo Fort. Nearby, the National Archaeological Museum displays bronze and ceramic artefacts. Northeast of town are the Terme Taurine, the ruins of a Roman thermal bath complex.

Chania, Greece

Chania is a city on the northwest coast of the Greek island of Crete. It’s known for its 14th-century Venetian harbour, narrow streets and waterfront restaurants. At the harbour entrance is a 16th-century lighthouse with Venetian, Egyptian and Ottoman influences. Opposite, the Nautical Museum has model ships, naval objects and photographs. The former monastery of St. Francis houses the Archaeological Museum of Chania.

Athens, Greece

Athens is the capital of Greece. It was also at the heart of Ancient Greece, a powerful civilisation and empire. The city is still dominated by 5th-century BC landmarks, including the Acropolis, a hilltop citadel topped with ancient buildings like the colonnaded Parthenon temple. The Acropolis Museum, along with the National Archaeological Museum, preserves sculptures, vases, jewellery and more from Ancient Greece.

Mykonos, Greece

Mykonos is known as the Ibiza of Greece as it is famous for its cosmopolitan atmosphere and lively nightlife. It is famous for its vast array of whitewashed churches, shops, museums and other structures that dates back to the 16th century.

Day 9: 15th June 2021
Kusadasi, Turkey

Kuşadası is a beach resort town on Turkey’s western Aegean coast. A jumping-off point for visiting the classical ruins at nearby Ephesus (or Efes), it’s also a major cruise ship destination. Its seafront promenade, marina, and harbour are lined with hotels and restaurants. Just offshore on Pigeon Island is a walled Byzantine castle that once guarded the town, connected to the mainland via causeway.

Santorini, Greece

Santorini is one of the Cyclades islands in the Aegean Sea. It was devastated by a volcanic eruption in the 16th century BC, forever shaping its rugged landscape. The whitewashed, cubiform houses of its 2 principal towns, Fira and Oia, cling to cliffs above an underwater caldera (crater). They overlook the sea, small islands to the west and beaches made up of black, red and white lava pebbles.
