Mental Illness is Common in Our Society

Outline

Adolescent Mental Health for the General Nurse Conference

Mental illness is common in our society with one in five adults experiencing a mental illness in any one year. Half the people who experience mental illness will not seek treatment and delayed treatment will adversely affect the success of any clinical intervention.

The onset of the most common mental health conditions that we see in general health care settings begins in adolescence. This conference is relevant to those Nurses who work in the acute care setting, community health setting, medical practices, youth services, schools, or other settings where there may be an adolescent client.

The information is as valid for the clinician as it is for parents, grandparents, and other family members.

In this program, you will learn how to assist an adolescent who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis until expert professional help is received or the crisis resolves.

You will learn about adolescent development, the signs and symptoms of the common and disabling mental health problems in young people, what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective, and how to provide first aid in crisis situations.

Mental Health Problems Covered

  • Depression and anxiety
  • Eating disorders
  • Psychosis
  • Substance use problems

Mental Health Crises Covered

  • Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
  • Non-suicidal self-injury
  • Panic attacks
  • Traumatic events
    Severe psychotic states
  • Severe effects from alcohol or other drug use
  • Aggressive behaviours.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Gain skills to offer initial support to adolescents developing a mental health problem
  • Gain skills to assist individuals with a worsening mental health problem
  • Gain skills to assist an individual in a mental health crisis
  • Explore the use of these skills in your current clinical practice
